How to Choose the Right Desk Height for Your Body

If you've ever felt shoulder tension or found yourself hunching forward at your desk, the problem might not be your chair — it could be your desk height. The standard desk height of 73-75cm works for some people, but certainly not everyone. Here's how to find what's right for your body.

Why Standard Measurements Fall Short

Standard desk heights were designed around an "average" person — but averages don't account for your unique proportions. Your torso length, arm length, and sitting height all affect where your desk surface should be. A desk that's too high forces your shoulders up; too low and you'll round your spine forward.

A Simple Self-Assessment You Can Do Now

Here's a quick way to check your current setup:

  1. Sit in your chair with feet flat on the floor and thighs parallel to the ground
  2. Let your arms hang naturally at your sides
  3. Bend your elbows to 90 degrees
  4. Your forearms should rest comfortably on the desk surface — if you're reaching up or pressing down, your desk height needs adjusting

For most people, the correct desk height falls between 68-76cm, depending on your proportions. Taller individuals often need 76cm or higher; those under 165cm may need closer to 68cm.

When Fixed Height Won't Cut It

If you share a workspace with others, or if your self-assessment reveals you're well outside the standard range, a fixed-height desk becomes limiting. This is where electric height adjustable desks prove their worth — not just for standing, but for dialling in your precise sitting height.

Adjustable desks also accommodate changes over time. New chair? Different shoes? Working from the couch occasionally? Your desk can adapt with you rather than forcing you to adapt to it.

Getting It Right Matters

Taking five minutes to measure and adjust your desk height can save you from years of unnecessary discomfort. Your body will thank you for it.
